Are you short on time, but big on wanting a home that’s in order and less chaotic?
Well today, I’m going to tell you about the Weekend Declutter Sprint. It’s fast. It’s focused. And it might just be the thing that helps you get past the clutter overwhelm.
But it’s not for everyone. And that’s totally okay. I’ll explain what it is, how it works, and I’ll help you to decide if it’s a good fit for you with what you’ve got going on in your life right now.

Hey, welcome to Organizing for Beautiful Living, the podcast for working moms and entrepreneur moms that provides sustainable organizing tips for your home, work and life.

I’m Zee Siman, Professional Organizer and Productivity Consultant, and I’m here to share simple ideas that don’t take a lot of time so you can love your home, excel at work, and have the time to enjoy both without stress or overwhelm.

Ready to get beautifully organized? Let’s make it happen!

Let’s start with the basics—what is a Weekend Declutter Sprint?

Well, a Weekend Declutter Sprint is a short, focused burst of decluttering activity with a very clear goal and a tight timeline. Think of it as a weekend challenge. You’re not overhauling your entire home, you’re picking one specific space, and you’re going all in.

Why is this so effective?

Well, because instead of endless sorting and perfectionism, you're focused on action.

Now I get some pushback about this from people, even other organizers, because we so often hear “Decluttering a little bit at a time is more realistic. Busy moms want to only spend 10 minutes at a time to declutter and organize! They don’t have time for more!”

But I actually think that that’s not true. Not all the time, and not for all working moms.

When I decided that I needed to declutter my house, like, really made up my mind to declutter so that our mornings could run more smoothly, so we could have no-cry mornings and get out the door on time, well the kids were little at the time and my husband was traveling quite a bit. I didn’t have much time. And decluttering was just so much!

We had so much stuff! And decluttering and organizing just a tiny area, like the cabinet where I kept the kids’ plastic lunch containers, and their little dishes and cups and things, when I would look at all that stuff, it was just so overwhelming.
So I reasoned with myself that yeah, I should just do 10 minutes at a time, like the organizing experts were saying.

Ten minutes here and there, and before I know it, my house would be magically organized!

But, yeah, that didn’t work. At all.

It wasn’t that it was a bad idea, not at all! I can tell you right now how you could declutter and organize your house 10 minutes at a time over a longer period of time, sure!

But when you’re so overwhelmed at the thought of just one cabinet, can you even imagine doing your whole kitchen?

Like, I couldn’t even get past the thought that the one cabinet I wanted to start with would take me ages, and then add all the other cabinets and the pantry and all that?

I’d never get done!

But I tried, a bunch of times. The first time, I remember so clearly that I opened that cabinet one evening after I had put the kids to bed, looked at it for, like, maybe 20 seconds, and I then threw the doors closed because I couldn’t even begin.

And then other times that I tried to organize that cabinet, I would spend 15 or 20 minutes trying to declutter all the stuff and place it into organized stacks and rows, and about a week later, it was just as cluttered as I had started with, and I’d give up.

Well, I’d give up for a little while, right? Until the cabinet bugged me so much that I’d try again, another 10 minutes here and there, and always, always, the same result.

Now, admittedly, I didn’t know how to declutter 10 minutes at a time and make it work.

Of course I learned and figured out how to declutter and organize like that, a little at a time, so that it would actually get done, no matter what the deadline is, and so that it wouldn’t get cluttered again.

But, what I realized about myself is that I hated decluttering like that. I found it boring, it wasn’t motivating, and I just wanted to stop!

Now, you know that I’m a lazy organizer. I’ve mentioned that plenty here.

And that means that I don’t want to spend all my time organizing and decluttering my house! I want it done. As fast as possible so I don’t have to think about it again!

You know what I mean?

So when I recognized that I wanted to be lazy about organizing in my own house, I experimented and tried different things, and I came up with these Sprints.

And like I said, Weekend Declutter Sprints are really effective because it doesn’t feel endless.

It doesn’t feel dreary or boring. You get stuff DONE!

You decide what space you're tackling, and I suggest starting with the kitchen because it’s where so much action takes place during stressful times, like the morning trying to get breakfast out, packing the lunches and getting everyone out the door on time without major tantrums or bad moods.

You also decide how long you're dedicating to it, which dictates just how deep into the decluttering and organizing you want to get.

And what success looks like for you. Usually that means less stuff, more clarity, and a space that functions better.

It’s short. It’s doable. And it works.

Now, a Decluttering Sprint isn’t for everyone, ok?

If you're in a high-stress season, dealing with grief or major transitions, or if the thought of moving quickly makes your anxiety spike, it’s okay to press pause.

I actually found it really hard to do a Declutter Sprint of my pictures. Digital or paper pictures, I just get way too caught up in the stories and memories. I know myself well enough to realize that with pictures, I’m better off doing the slow, little by little approach. And that doesn’t bother me because it’s not boring to me. It’s nice to reminisce, and I like to do it with a family member nearby so we can talk about the memories.

So yes, some people need a slower, more gradual approach. One drawer a day. One shelf at a time.

If that’s you, there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, that might be the more sustainable path for you right now.

The Sprint is for those times when you’re really craving quick results or a momentum boost.

A declutter sprint creates really powerful momentum that comes from seeing visible change really fast.

So don’t pressure yourself to be in “sprint mode” if your life feels more like a crawl right now. This is about giving you practical solutions, it’s not another to-do list that makes you feel behind.

Now, if you're feeling stuck and overwhelmed, here's why I recommend a Weekend Declutter Sprint as an effective organizing tool:

First, it builds confidence. You finish one area and think, “Wow, I actually did that!”

Not only that but you actually see results, dramatic or not, that make your home feel more functional. You’re not digging through things to get out what you need, you can find things more quickly, you’re out the door faster in the mornings, with less chaos.

Secondly, it creates momentum. When you quickly get through one cabinet, it creates this positive feeling of accomplishment that rolls into the next one, then into the drawer next to it, and so on.

Third, it gets you out of perfection paralysis. There’s no more trying to make it all look perfectly aesthetic, all coordinated, or waiting for the perfect weekend to get started. You make progress now. This weekend! And no matter how it looks, it’s not as important as getting decluttered! The area you’re working on is going to work better for you, no matter if your containers match or not.

And fifth, it delivers quick wins, which, let’s be honest, we all need more of when our homes feel out of control.

And I’ve seen it time and time again. Working moms complete one sprint, and suddenly, they start seeing new possibilities in their homes. The entryway gets a refresh. The closet becomes manageable. It's like a snowball of success rolling downhill, and that snowball goes faster and faster as it goes. Your decluttering will go faster and faster with each space.

OK, but here’s where you could falter. You do a Weekend Declutter Sprint, and you expect that things will stay in order just because you’ve done everything - you told your family where everything goes, so things should be relatively easy to keep organized.

Only, a week or two later, you look up, and the clutter’s back! And you’re asking yourself “Did I just waste my entire weekend doing a declutter sprint, and now things are just as chaotic as they were before?”

It’s like my cabinet with the kids’ cups and plates and lunch containers. I made some progress, but before I knew it, it was back to being messy again, and I had to dig around to find what I needed each day.

I learned after that no maintenance, not having a maintenance plan, means that the clutter creeps back in.

But don’t worry. This isn’t about adding more to your plate. The maintenance plan that supports a Sprint should be just as simple and light-touch, ok?

And that maintenance plan is going to be unique to you because you’ll know what needs your attention, and how often you need to do it, right?

Because if I tell you, ‘Oh, just do a 10-minute reset each evening, or even each Sunday night do a reset. You know, like, go around your house and put some things away and put some stuff in your Donations bag,’ that can very quickly feel like a huge task, right?

But if you look at your kitchen after doing a Kitchen Weekend Declutter Sprint, and you realize that your hot spots are the kids’ cabinet and the pantry, because those two spots get out of control pretty fast, well then, there are various things you could do to keep those areas from getting messy and cluttered again that don’t have to involve reorganizing every single day.

You could do a 5-minute touch-up once a week, you could include some micro-organizing during your regular, you know, daily routines.

See, you and your family are going to be living in your house even after your declutter sprint. So it’s not like every room of your house is going to be tidy every minute of every day. In fact, when you love your home, and you love living in your home, it will not be pristine all the time.

You need to live and play and work and relax in your house in comfort, but what you want is a simple maintenance plan to be able to tidy up quickly, in a few minutes a day, when you’re ready to.

This does not have to be a rigid schedule, either, if that doesn’t suit you, unless you know that without a schedule, you and your family won’t keep up with what needs to be done. It needs to be just consistent enough to keep your space from slipping back into chaos.

For example, if your Sprint included your pantry, your maintenance plan could be as simple as checking expiration dates once a week while you meal plan. That’s it!

But if your Sprint was your kids’ toys, for example, then you might need a schedule or a chart to assign certain responsibilities to each child on various days. So your oldest can be in charge of gathering up the toys from all the living areas and putting them away on Sunday after dinner, and your youngest could be in charge of putting all the Legos back into the Lego bin or the Lego drawer at the same time.

It’s all about sustainable systems that work with your life, not arbitrary rules and rigid schedules that are going to bring you more stress.

So, let’s come back to this question: Is a Weekend Declutter Sprint right for you?

Well, to figure this out, ask yourself:

Do I feel overwhelmed by one specific area of my home?
Do I want quick results that help me feel more in control?
Am I looking forward to a weekend of focused effort to get it done?
Am I craving momentum, not perfection?
Well, if you said yes to at least 2 of those, then a Weekend Declutter Sprint might be exactly what you need to get started.

Remember: this is a practical solution, not a perfect one.
It’s meant to serve you, not stress you out.
